A learner permit allows you to learn to drive on public roads in Ireland and you must always have it with you when you are driving.

You can decide which course suits your needs depending on how much practice you have done beforehand.

You may also be asked to point out different parts under the bonnet, such as how to check oil levels, or which part is the engine.

From 1 January 2025, the cost of a learner permit will increase from €35 to €45.

There is no set cost for EDT or IBT lessons and each driving instructor determines their own price.

Getting a licence is one of those very grown up things that our childhood selves aspire to with envy and anticipation.

In terms of sessions, 12 one-hour sessions are required to be completed in Ireland.

If you have a full driving licence from a country that does not have a licence exchange agreement with Ireland, you will only be required to complete 6 EDT sessions before taking the Irish driving test.

Any unexpired period remaining on a previous learner permit will not be added to your new one.
